"Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government's purposes are beneficial. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greater dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding." - Louis Brandeis

Exactly...
Seinfeld isn't completely right. My Mom knew my name…it just took her a while to run down the list to get to it...
I think that when I was a kid, I was more like the Jerry Seinfeld kid. Unfortunately (perhaps), my children were treated more or less the same way. However I was a boy and my children were all girls.
But my grandchildren? Ok, let me put it this way. My five year old grandson has LITERALLY a major league baseball hitting coach for T-Ball. So my children have embraced that whole thing. I was kicked out the door and told to hit the ball.
I do have those moments from time to time, mostly when I get excited. "It's time to leave the house right now! Now get your backpack on Tom, Dick, I mean Harry!"
I thought the same thing - I read books by psychobabblists, and they get it HALF right. The current book I'm reading addresses "helicopter" parents, but then says "obviously spanking is bad and teaches violence…" Then I start to wonder why I am reading the book.

Isn't anyone here concerned that the two psychobabblists interviewed here are part of the problem of "modern" parenting?
I don't think that the two shrinks are the problem, but they're clearly a symptom.
